Union Street Festival

June 30th, 2010 · No Comments

On June 4th and 5th San Francisco celebrated its 35th year of one of its largest free annual events, The Union Street Festival. Beginning at Gough Street, the festival featured over 175 arts and crafts booths, gourmet food booths, and live entertainment for anyone that wanted to indulge in some San Francisco fun in the sun. The Festival is held on San Francisco’s fashionable Union Street where historic Victorians have been transformed into popular boutiques, art galleries and restaurants. Because this is such a forward thinking city, all aspects of the Union Street Festival was eco-friendly to promote the value of green thinking in our everyday lives!

Us at Sikara thought this would be a good way to get our name out there and meet neighboring stores, so we knew we absolutely had to participate in this annual event! Although it was a busy two days we were happy to have our employees, Alison, Monica, Devin, and Denayja there to help out with the craziness that came with the festival. We were also so happy to have our newest addition to the Sikara family, Azmeera, there to help out too!

Beauty for a Bargain: Sikara Shows at the Austin Designer Sample Sale!

June 28th, 2010 · No Comments

Sikara's table at the saleLast Wednesday, Sikara & Co. had the opportunity to be a part of the 5th annual Austin Designer Sample Sale. The sale was fabulous, featuring Austin-based designers in jewelry, fashion, and accessories.

The atmosphere in Linda Asaf’s showroom on West 6th Street was fun and inviting. Everyone enjoyed the live music by Los Dos—they serenaded shoppers with original pieces and also took requests! The sale was a bargain hunter’s paradise, with prices as low as 75% off. Shoppers had the luxury of browsing through Linda Asaf’s flirty cocktail wear, Rachelle Briton’s eye-catching dresses, jewelry by Austin locals Catherine Nicole, Micah Yancey, and Candace Yang, as well as beautiful scarves from Shimmer & Bliss.

One table that seemed to receive a lot of traffic was Sew Sisters. Megan Summerville, who was recently recognized as Texas’s Next Top Designer, started the line. Sikara & Co. was set up right next to Sew Sisters so we got to meet Megan and hear about her line of beautiful lingerie.

Overall, the sale was a great success! Sikara & Co. picked up some new contacts and enjoyed seeing all the talent right here in Austin.

Real Women, Real Style: Linda Asaf

June 3rd, 2010 · No Comments

Asaf3Keeping with the spirit of the bridal season, we had the pleasure of interviewing Linda Asaf, who was named Austin’s Best Bridal Designer of 2009 by Austin Fashion Week. But this noted fashion designer, who runs in the same circles as fashion giants like Vera Wang, Bill Blass and Badgley Mischka, knows about more than just bridal wear. Her collection of gorgeous gowns and evening wear display her chic and edgy sense of creativity and style. And we’re not the only ones who noticed; she was also named Best Austin Designer for the past two years by Rare Magazine. With a background in business and a flourishing career in fashion, Ms. Asaf is the epitome of a real woman with real style. We can’t wait to see what she does next!

Sikara (S): Who has influenced you the most as a designer?

Linda (L): There are so many people over the years but I would have to say it was my mother. She had an amazing sense of style and grace. I still love to look at photos of her from the fifties with her gorgeous dresses, handbags, shoes and headpieces.

(S): Is there a certain element or special feature that you put into your designs that you feel makes them special?

(L): Yes, I always try to feature interesting details to make them more unique. I also seek out unique and special fabrics.

(S): What is the biggest difference between the fashion business world and the traditional business world?

(L): Business is business and you have to be focused on the bottom line. I think fashion is very alluring to many people but you have to have a good business mind to succeed in this very competitive industry.  There are a lot of people who are drawn in but don’t have what it takes to succeed unfortunately.
(S): What item in your wardrobe would you save in a fire?

(L): My mother’s black silk opera coat with turquoise lining.

(S): What do you think has contributed most to your success?

(L): Stubbornness!  It’s actually a fairly common trait in entrepreneurs. AKA perserverence, drive, etc.

(S): When your life gets really busy, what do you do to center your self and avoid getting overwhelmed?

(L): I meditate a lot in the mornings and use positive imagery. I also try to work out regularly.

(S): What is your favorite thing about being a business owner in Austin?

Asaf2

(L): Austinites love to support their own. I am so blessed with how much support and encouragement I receive from the community.

(S): What do you miss most about New York?

(L): Honestly, my friends whom I’ve had for twenty years. On the fashion side, it’s the everyday access to resources and the cosmopolitan and fashionable environment.

(S): Is there any advice you would give to a young woman about to start a career in fashion?

(L): I tell them to get the technical training as well as some business background. Also that everything costs more and takes longer than you think when you’re starting a business so be patient.

(S): We hear one of your passions is sailing!  Are there any skills from sports and sailing that you bring i

nto your business?

(L): I guess I’d have to say that they both involve efficiencies in time and motion. Both can be pressure/deadline driven and accuracy is extremely important in both. It helps to have that training in sailing that I can transfer over to fashion.

(S): What is the biggest different between your bridal designs and your regular collection?
(L): In one sense, they are very similar. Most brides I design for are looking for something different and fashion forward. I have desgned wedding gowns in gold, cactus green, grey, and even ginger!  I am getting more into an urban contemporary style going forward with my ready to wear collection though.

(S): What is the ugliest bridesmaid’s dress you have ever seen?

(L): Wow!  I think it would have to be a vintage one that someone brought in. It would have melted if you put a match to it.

(S): What advice would you give a bride about selecting the perfect wedding dress?
(L): I’d say to go with gut instinct. You’ll know when it feels right. Also, don’t let others interfere with what you want and don’t try to please others too much. This is your day!

(S): What is your favorite Sikara jewelry piece?

(L): There are so many!  I wear the gorgeous silver cuff all the time. It’s fabulous!

From Bostin to Bali

Inside Sikara's New Boston Store!

Inside Sikara's New Boston Store!

After hearing about my crazy May, my good friend and stylist, Jill told me I should name my blog this month, “from Boston to Bali!”.  It was a crazy nonstop week for me as we launched our second pop-up store in Boston before I left on a 36 hour flight for my brother’s wedding in Bali on May 8th .

LAUNCHING OF SIKARA’S BOSTON POP-UP STORE

I was  excited to roll-up my sleeves and launch our second pop-up store in the beginning of May on the prestigious Newbury St. in Boston.  I flew into Boston on May 1st and the next day we were open for business!  One of my dearest friends, Angela, probably didn’t know what she signed up for when she picked me up from the airport. Immediately we started our rounds; from IKEA, to Home Depot to Crate & Barrel and Costco to get things together for our launch.

Sikara's New Store @ 292 Newbury St.

Sikara's New Store @ 292 Newbury St

I absolutely love our new space at 292 Newbury St.  The space has crisp white tables and a warm lavender blue color on the walls.  The first time I saw the space, it felt just like home.  I guess it’s like finding your perfect partner…it was love at first sight!

We have some fantastic neighbors including MiniLuxe Nails right next door; talk about pampering yourself, first with a beautiful manicure, followed by a sweet Sikara cocktail ring to match those beautiful nails! Michael Labrecque Salon is right below us, so you can get your hair done too and be all set for a night on the town!

I worked long and hard and by Sunday, May 2nd, I had recruited my two best friends (Apara and Angela) to help me with the anticipated rush of Sunday sales.  They unpacked jewels (and enjoyed getting first dibs on pieces).  By Tuesday, most of the display and merchandising were ready to go!  We imported our talent from Austin and San Francisco. My Boston Pop-Up Store Manager, Jessica flew in from a red-eye from SF and came to work right off the plane.

Jessica & Me!

Jessica & Me!

Jessica has been working with us in our San Francisco store, so I was so excited when she accepted the offer to help us launch Boston.  Her real passion lies with the non-profit world so she’ll be spearheading the launch of Sikara’s Country Giving Program while she’s in Boston this summer.  One of my long-term visions was not only to share the beauty of the world through our beautiful products, but we also empower our customers to make a difference by choosing how to give back.  Our new Country Giving Program will make our Sikara customers “Global Ambassadors” as they will get to donate 5% of the profits from the sale and choose from various nonprofits that are doing amazing work around the world.

I only spent four days with Jessica before I left for Bali.  But in those few days I was so excited to see the truly international clientele of our Boston visitors.  We had customers around the globe including visitors from Korea, Australia, France, Italy, Turkey, etc.  I was so excited when Jessica was able to speak in her Indonesian language (Bahasa) to some Malaysian customers.  Apparently her Spanish has come in handy too while helping some Argentinean and Spanish customers!

So off to Bali I went…catching up on my sleep and movie watching!  It was nice to finally fly Singapore airlines. (For years, I’ve been hearing how amazing their service and food is).  Thirty-Six hours later after layovers in San Francisco, Hong Kong, Singapore, I finally arrived in Bali.  This was my third visit to Bali in 11 years and proved to once again be one of my favorite spots in the world.  My first trip was right after undergrad when I went backpacking with friends across Southeast Asia.  Then in 2008, I returned a decade later to attend a friend’s wedding!

The Villa's Infinity Pool leading to the Indian Ocean!

This time around, I arrived at about 11pm and headed with my friend Bjorn to the villa where my brother was getting married.  It was a gorgeous five-bedroom villa which was built by a French family about 2 years ago.  The décor was absolutely amazing.  If I were to have a villa in Bali…this is exactly the way I would want it to be. Before I knew it, I was having Indian mehndi done on my hands!  It’s an Indian tradition before the wedding, where the bride and girls of the wedding party get henna on their hands.

Brandi's Mehendi!

Brandi's Mehendi!

Of course the bride has the most henna.  Here’s a picture of my sister-in-law’s henna in the pool!  Thought this looked cool and artistic!

The next day we headed to the beautiful and famous Aman resorts for lunch.  My good friend Farhana from Oakland, CA and her friend Kate from Boston joined the party.  I was so excited to see Farhana since she was on month 3 of her 5-month sabbatical of surfing!  It just so happened our paths crossed here in Bali!

Lunch at Aman Resort

I woke up early the morning of May 12th, the wedding day.  All I have to say is that destination weddings are the best.  Where else do you see the groom swimming an hour before the wedding and the bride getting a massage 2 hours before!  Actually, May 12th was a very auspicious day and official holiday for the Balinese.  It was the beginning of their Hindu celebration called Hari Raya Galungan.  We started the day off by visiting the famous Uluwatu temple.  This was my third time at the temple and as always I enjoyed the spectacular views.

Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple

You have to beware of the aggressive monkeys because they rule the temple!  I think they have a secret dealio with the ladies that sell peanuts.  The routine goes as follows…a cute monkey will startle and grab an unsuspecting tourist’s sunglasses or camera.  You hear a few screams and laughter from the other tourists…then the nice Balinese peanut lady comes to the rescue by throwing a bag of peanuts to the monkey.  The monkey looses interest in the glasses or camera and drops it for the more edible treat.  The tourist is so grateful to get his possessions back that of course he pays the peanut lady generously.  I call this the “Monkey Kick-Back”!

Luckily no one from our wedding party was attacked…just one of them was loved (see picture below as our friend give this monkey a piggy back ride!

Our friend Steve with a monkey friend!

Our friend Steve with a monkey friend!

The wedding was absolutely spectacular.  They set up the Mandap (a traditional Indian canopy where the bride and groom sit with the priest and get married), on top of the infinity pool overlooking the Indian Ocean.  It was such a stunning view, especially as the sunset.  Hindu weddings can traditionally last hours, but my brother and his wife-to-be had requested the cliff-notes version which lasted an hour or so.  The priest, Dr. Somvir, apparently is one of the only Indian Hindu priests that lives on the island.  He has a yoga center that I want to check out on my next visit.  The evening ended with a yummy Indian dinner catered in from Queen’s India in Seminyak and with a little dancing DJ’ed by some locals.

The next morning, we hiked down the cliffs to the beach and set sail, the bride and groom’s traditional Bengali wedding hats.  I

Wedding with traditional Bengali hats!

took off that afternoon to join my parents at the Ayana (former Ritz Carlton),which was one of my favorite resorts I’ve been to.  Last time I visited Bali, some friends stayed here and when I went to meet them for brunch I fell in love with the place, so I recommended my parents stay there.  Since my dad isn’t into massages (lucky me) I was able to use his spot at the spa.  Little did I know that this is one of Conde Nast’s top spas in the world.  I had one of my best massages yet – Balinese style of course!

Afterwards we went and had dinner at their famous and new Rock Bar that hung over the ocean.  Unfortunately we didn’t have the best sunset but it was still gorgeous.

Double Rainbow at Tanah Lot

Double Rainbow at Tanah Lot

On Friday, May 14th, I headed out with my parents to the western part of Bali – Tanah Lot.  My mom and I got up early on Saturday morning and walked the grounds of the Nirwana Hotel.  We saw from afar the beautiful Tahna Lot Temple and were treated to a double rainbow!  What a sight!

Afterwards, we headed north to see some temples and the rice paddies.  I fell in love with the Saranam Eco Resort in Tabanan, where our wonderful driver, Is, took us for lunch.  Here are some pictures and views from our lunch.  I would definitely think about staying at this hotel next time.

After settling my parents into a bungalow in Gyanar near Ubud., I headed down to Uluwatu to stay with Farhana at her villa she had rented for the week.  We hung out and dined at a local place where all the surfers go.  On Sunday morning, I enjoyed just relaxing looking out at the ocean while she cooked me breakfast at the villa!  Later in the afternoon we headed out to Seminyak for a little shopping where I picked up some nice lightweight Balinese dresses from one of my favorite boutiques.

Afterwards I met a new designer that I’ll be working with in Bali.  His work is spectacular as he works in .95 silver and has a contemporary / modern edge due to his European roots.  His background fits perfectly into our existing team of international designers.   Our tagline is “Modern Fusion Jewelry” and this is reflective in many of our designers…for example one of our Indian designers has trained in Italy, one of our Mexican designers is Israeli, etc.  I’m excited to be working with him as we launch our new Indonesian inspired collection!

On Monday, May 17th, I headed out to Singapore for a day layover so I could see a few friends.  My friend Ash was gracious to

My friend Ash in Singapore

My friend Ash in Singapore

host me in his high rise home overlooking the Singapore skyline.  He treated me to a delicious seafood dinner at Boat Caye.  I was so impressed with the creativity of the Singaporeans.  We passed an area where there are tons of bars and restaurants.  For example they had a bar called the “Clinic” where they used hospital beds as seats.  Another place had wheelchairs as seats.  The sheer diversity of restaurants also amazed me!  From Moroccan to Indian to Spanish to Japanese, this was my kind of place.  Ash tried to convince me to move to Singapore…I have admit it is one cool city.  It had been almost a decade since I had last been to Singapore so there was a lot of development since then.  One of the craziest things I saw was the new Sands development.  Doesn’t this remind you of the Jetson’s (cartoon from when I was growing up?).

On Tuesday before I left Singapore I met up with my friend So-Young (from Business school – although she lives in LA, we

My friends in Singapore

My friends in Singapore

actually end up seeing each other abroad more – we’ve meet up in the most random countries like Brazil, Bali, Singapore, France) and Elaine (I had met her in Bali last time at my friend’s wedding.)  She inspires me as she has completed the RacethePlanet.com race in Nimibia last fall).  We had a wonderful lunch and caught up on life before I found myself back on a flight to the US!

Anyway, that was a whirlwind of a trip from Boston to Bali…now I need a real vacation!

Check out part of our interview with Elizabeth below!

P1010033We are excited to feature Super-Mom and Austin, Texas resident, Elizabeth Fitzgerald, in honor of Mother’s Day! Elizabeth, her husband Rob and their dog Guinness are thrilled about the recent adoption of their one-year-old daughter Vivian. In memory of their son Ford who died shortly after birth, Elizabeth and her husband helped start a program with the March of Dimes NICU Family Support. Women who lose a child at birth at Dell Children’s, Seton Main, and Brackenridge hospitals will receive grief information and a beautiful Sikara heart necklace. Elizabeth looks forward to expanding the program to reach more families.

Check out our interview with Elizabeth below:

Sikara (S): What advice can you give to someone who is thinking about or already in the process of adopting a child

Elizabeth (E): I cannot say enough positive things about adoption! If someone is considering adoption, I would recommend that they do their research, talk to others who have adopted, go to a credible adoption agency and attend an orientation. For those in process, keep yourself busy during the wait and don’t listen to the “horror” stories!

(S): What was the adoption process like for you?

(E): It was amazing but had its ups and downs! We attended orientation at Gladney Center for Adoption in May of 2009 and our application was approved in September. We were matched with a birth mom in December of 2009 but it fell through at the last minute. We were matched with Vivian’s birth mom in March and Vivian was born in May of 2010. We had a wonderful caseworker, Sara who helped us through the process and was a huge support. It was such an amazing experience to be in the delivery room when Vivian was born. We have really enjoyed getting to know her birthmother, Caitlin and are forever in her debt.

(S): How did you get involved with America’s Charities?

(E): I was in another job doing event planning and decided that I missed the nonprofit world too much. Fortunately was hired as the regional manager job with America’s Charities in 2005.

(S): What has your work with America’s Charities meant to you?

(E): It has been very rewarding. I have been with America’s Charities 5 years and have been privileged to work with so many wonderful nonprofits like The American Red Cross of Central Texas, Caring for Children Foundation, The Lance Armstrong Foundation, and Animal Trustees of Austin to name a few. Seeing the great work these groups do every day keeps me so motivated to help them fundraise through workplace giving  campaigns.

(S): How was it cathartic for you to start the March of Dimes NICU family support program?

(E): It has been very cathartic to help other women and families through the March of Dimes NICU support program. We hope that the necklaces and grief resources can give hope to families. It is a way that we can honor our sons Ford and Teagan and our daughter Maggie so their memory can live on.

(S): Did you encounter any difficulties getting the program together?

(E): We were very fortunate to have extremely generous friends and family who provided the funds needed to get the program started. The March of Dimes staff has also been tremendously supportive to us and extremely committed to the program.

(S): What are your plans for the future of March of Dimes, as far as expanding the program?

(E): We hope to get the word out about the program to more of the community to continue to help raise the funds necessary to keep the program going and hopefully to reach more families.

(S): Is there any cause or organization that you feel is not getting enough attention that you think there should be more light shed on?

(E): That is a tough question. There are so many organizations that need more support especially during these economic times. Honestly, the March of Dimes NICU support program needs a lot of funds this year to keep these programs running. The support and information these families receive during a very scary time is invaluable.

(S): What advice can you offer to women who have lost a child about coping with it?

(E): Lean on your support structure or seek one out such as the March of Dimes NICU family support program. Also remember that although the feeling of loss will probably never go away, which is completely natural, life will get better again. Every story is different, but in our case it took a village. I relied heavily on my husband, family, friends, church, and counselor to make it through. There were days when I did not want to get out of bed but I had friends coming over, calling me, and sending me notes that made me want to face the day again. Finding a cause like the March of Dimes also allowed me to focus my grief on something positive. Finding a way to memorialize your child is very cathartic.  Finally, get out of the house. We took a trip the first Christmas after Ford died and it made a big difference. Some women I met did not leave the house for weeks, did not talk to anybody and then seemed to move on which worked for them. But for me, I need to find ways to express my grief in order to begin the healing process.

(S): How would you recommend someone get more active in charities in their community?

(E): Find what your passion is and there is a nonprofit for it! VolunteerMatch.com is a great way to find opportunities. Also talk to friends and co-workers about organizations they have volunteered with and enjoy. See if your company has a volunteer program and ask if they have a workplace giving program, especially if they match your donations.

(S): How has your style changed since becoming a mother?

(E): That is funny, well, definitely more casual! The first 6 months I only wore things that I did not care if they had spit up on but now I can dress up a bit more.  I wear a lot of pants so I can get on the floor with Vivian and mostly flats; high heels are reserved for nights out!

(S): Since you are a person that does so much for others, what is the one thing in your life that is just for you? A moment or activity that is your way of celebrating yourself?

(E): Due to my pregnancy medical issues I gained a lot of weight. So getting in shape has been the thing I do for me. I just finished a two month boot camp which began at 6:00am three times a week; it was hard but I loved it. I am thinking about trying Pilates next. I feel so healthy and strong now. I also love to read a good book; I just started the “Widow Cliquot” and love it – France and Champagne – what’s not to like!

(S): What is your favorite Sikara Piece?

(E): Of course the Woven Heart Necklace. When I wear it I feel my children are still close to me and it always reminds me of the strength I have.
